What God Is Showing Me: Sometimes the Hardest Time to Get to Church Is When You Need It Most

Sometimes the hardest time to get to church is the very season when you most need what God placed in the church. When life is easy, we can mistake fellowship for an accessory. When life is heavy, we begin to understand why God designed believers to pray for one another, encourage one another, bear one another’s burdens, and keep pointing one another toward Jesus.

Hebrews 10:24–25 says, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another.” The purpose is not attendance for attendance’s sake. The purpose is spiritual connection that strengthens faithfulness.

Struggle Changes What We Think We Need

When people are overwhelmed, they often withdraw. That response is understandable. Tired people protect what little energy they have left. Hurt people become cautious. Busy people begin cutting things from the schedule. But sometimes the very thing we remove is the thing God intended to use to strengthen us.

We should never shame people who are struggling. Shame may produce temporary compliance, but it rarely produces healthy discipleship. Shepherding asks a better question: what is making connection difficult, and how can we help this person move toward Jesus instead of farther away?

Grace for the Struggling Does Not Mean Indifference About Connection

Grace understands the reality of work schedules, illness, family responsibilities, emotional exhaustion, disappointment, and seasons of transition. But grace also keeps calling us toward life. It does not tell us spiritual isolation is harmless. It helps us find a faithful next step.

That next step may be worship this Sunday. It may be Bible study. It may be prayer. It may be calling somebody and saying, “I have been struggling.” It may be bringing your children back after months away. It may simply be deciding that the season you are in will not become the reason you disappear from God.

What God Is Showing Me… Sometimes people do not need to be scolded back into church; they need to be shepherded back to Jesus.
